Course Overview

6 modules · Average 3 to 4 hours to complete · Work at your own pace

01

The Power of Story

Grants are not won by facts alone. This module explains why storytelling is central to effective UK grant fundraising: how grant panels make decisions, the role of emotional and rational elements in assessor judgement, and why the strongest applications weave data and human narrative together. You will learn the UK regulatory context for fundraising storytelling, including what the Charities Act 2011, the Fraud Act 2006 and the Code of Fundraising Practice require. The Zoom In / Zoom Out narrative approach is introduced.

Fraud Act 2006 · Code of Fundraising Practice · Assessor mindset · Data + story framework
02

Know Your Story

Before you can tell your story to a funder, you must know it yourself. This module helps you excavate, articulate and structure the core narrative of your organisation around five essential elements: the Problem, the People, your Solution, the Change and Why You. You will build a reusable internal Case for Support, articulate your Theory of Change in plain language, describe your beneficiaries with accuracy and dignity, and apply the public benefit test required by the Charities Act 2011.

Case for support · Theory of Change · Outputs vs outcomes · Public benefit test · Beneficiary dignity
03

Know Your Funder

Understand the landscape of UK grant funders: trusts and foundations, Lottery distributors, statutory funders, corporate foundations and community foundations. Learn how to identify funder priorities, adapt your narrative intelligently, and understand the legal obligation to avoid double-funding. Full funder research methods, GrantNav, 360Giving and pipeline management are covered in depth in the companion course Finding the Right Funders.

Funder types · Priority alignment · Double-funding · See also: Finding the Right Funders
04

Making the Match

Matching your story to a funder is a strategic act, not a lottery. This module provides a practical matching framework connecting your charity’s activities, beneficiaries, geography and evidence to specific funder priorities. You will learn how to build a funder-story matrix, adapt your core narrative for different audiences without losing authenticity, and address the Social Value Act 2012 in statutory applications.

Funder-story matrix · Narrative adaptation · Social Value Act 2012 · Eligibility assessment
05

Crafting the Narrative

The craft of application writing: three-act narrative structure, compelling opening statements, integrating beneficiary stories ethically and effectively, writing about outcomes with specificity, Plain English principles, and quality assurance before submission. Budget principles are introduced here; full budget construction, full cost recovery and match funding are covered in depth in the companion course Budget Brilliance.

Application structure · Opening statements · Case study technique · See also: Budget Brilliance
06

Ethics, Evidence & Impact

Your obligations under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 when using beneficiary stories, quotations and images. The Code of Fundraising Practice standards on dignity, consent and honest representation. The Equality Act 2010 and how it applies to describing beneficiaries. What to do when an application is unsuccessful: requesting feedback, learning from rejection and maintaining productive funder relationships.

UK GDPR & consent · Code of Fundraising Practice · Equality Act 2010 · Handling rejection

“Data tells funders how many people need your help. Story tells them why it matters. You need both, but it is the story that makes them care enough to say yes. The organisations that understand this are the ones that consistently win funding.”
