Course Overview

6 modules · Average 3 to 4 hours to complete · Work at your own pace

01

Funding Foundations

Before writing a word, you need to understand the landscape. This module gives you a confident overview of the UK funding landscape, the four main types of funder (trusts and foundations, statutory, corporate, community foundations), the different types of funding available (project, core, capital, restricted and unrestricted), and how to find and assess the right funder for your organisation. You will learn the four criteria for assessing funder fit and the four things that funders universally want to see: clear need, credibility, impact and sustainability.

Funder types · Project vs core funding · Funder fit assessment · GrantFinder & 360Giving
02

Preparation Powerhouse

Most of the work in winning applications happens before you write a single word. This module covers the preparation that separates consistently successful fundraisers from those who write well but rarely win. You will work through a comprehensive organisational readiness checklist covering charity registration, safeguarding, data protection, financial management, governance and equality policies. You will also learn how to gather compelling evidence of need, build a reusable Case for Support and create efficient systems for managing the application process.

Organisational readiness · UK GDPR compliance · Case for support · Evidence of need · Application management
03

Crafting Your Case

Your case for support is the heart of every application. This module shows you how to build and present it, how to articulate your Theory of Change, describe your beneficiaries with specificity and dignity, present your outcomes and impact evidence compellingly, and write about your organisation’s track record in a way that builds funder confidence. You will learn the Zoom In / Zoom Out technique for combining population-level data with individual human stories, and how to write for an intelligent non-specialist assessor.

Theory of Change · Outputs vs outcomes · Beneficiary voice · Value for money · Zoom In/Zoom Out technique
04

Budget Brilliance

A well-built budget is one of your most powerful fundraising tools. This module covers how to build a grant budget that is accurate, compliant and persuasive, including how to calculate staff costs using current UK employer National Insurance and pension rates, how to apply Full Cost Recovery principles, how to handle VAT correctly, and how to write a budget narrative that brings your numbers to life. Common budget mistakes that get applications rejected are analysed, with worked examples throughout.

Full Cost Recovery · Employer National Insurance and pension · VAT for charities · Budget narrative · Charities Act 2011
05

Evaluation Excellence

Funders want to know how you will measure success before they invest. This module covers how to build a proportionate, credible evaluation plan as part of your application, how to set SMART objectives and meaningful outcome indicators, how to choose appropriate data collection methods, and how to present your evaluation approach in a way that signals credibility without over-promising. The Charities Act 2011 reporting obligations that underpin evaluation are explained clearly.

SMART objectives · Outcome indicators · Logic models · Evaluation frameworks · Charities SORP
06

Application Arsenal

The final module is a practical guide to the mechanics of writing, submitting and following up a successful application. You will learn how to structure responses to common application questions, how to make every word count within tight word limits, how to present your organisation’s financials credibly, how to avoid the most common rejection triggers, and how to manage your application pipeline efficiently. Post-submission best practice, including chasing decisions, handling rejections and requesting feedback, is covered in full.

Application structure · Word limits · Financial credibility · Common rejection triggers · Post-submission follow-up
